What is the Edenmore Community Development Project?

All Community Development Projects:

• Have an anti-poverty, anti-exclusion focus and promote the participation of people experiencing poverty and exclusion at all levels of the project.
• Work from community development principles and methods
• Provide support and act as a catalyst for community development activity
• Act as a resource in the communities of which they are a part
• Provide co-ordination and co-operation between community, voluntary and statutory groups in their areas
• Involve representatives of groups which experience poverty and social exclusion within their management structures.

There are currently 180 Community Development Projects (CDPs) and 10 support agencies funded under the Community Development Programme. There were just 15 CDPs in 1990.

Edenmore is one of those 180 CDPs operating across Ireland.

Who is the Edenmore Community Development Project?

Edenmore CDP is managed by a group of local volunteers, known as a Voluntary Board of Management (VBoM). This is a local committe of people who come from the Edenmore area, who are committed to improving the social, economic and environmental conditions for everyone, but particularly those experiencing poverty, marginalisation and social exclusion for whatever reasons.

The Edenmore CDP also employs a Project Co-ordinator and Project Administrator. These are tasked with ensuirng the VBoMs Workplan for the year is put into operation.

The VBoM Members as of June 2008 are Felim McMahon, Margaret Carroll, Ray Daly, Betty Brown and Matthias Borschied.

The Co-ordinator is Richard Costello and the Administrator is Amanda Mitchell.

Edenmore is located within the Raheny area of North Dublin. It is a well established urban area and has a population of around10 000 people. The estate began to be built during the early part of the 1960s and was part of the Dublin City Corporations extensive program to provide social housing for an expanding population. It was also developed as part of a trend towards suburbanisation as conditions in the Inner City areas of Dublin were increasingly seen as unacceptable. The estate today has expanded to encompass a much larger area that was probably never anticipated with a mix of both social housing, still under the authority of Dublin City Council and Private Housing. The area is of a typical design for it's time with features that in todays housing market, if included would put a large dent in anybody s finances. The housing layout is typically terraced blocks of 5 or 6 houses, with gardens at the front and the back. Houses are usually 3 bedroomed and the gardens are very extensive. Consequently density levels are very low. There is also a significant amount of Green Space within the area, which adds to the overall quality of the estate.

It is serviced by Dublin Bus (42A/B and 29A) and a local DART Station on it's perimeter, providing good access into Dublin City (traveling South) and out of the City to Malahide and Howth (traveling North). Arterial routes by car that take you to Edenmore are the Malahide Road, Howth Road, Tonelegee Road and Springdale Road.

The Project office itself is located at Unit 7C, Edenmore Shopping Centre, Edenmore Avenue, Raheny, Dublin 5. We can be contacted via telephone: 01-8771957 or email: edenmorecdp@gmail.com
